Board Members
The Complementary Healthcare Council is an independent not for profit industry association governed by a Board of Directors.
President – Steven Mann
Steven began his working life as an accountant at Schering Plough and then moved into sales and marketing in a Brand Management role. He later joined the Consumer Products division of Bayer, where he rose to the position of Marketing Manager. His next role was Sales and Marketing Director at Johnson and Johnson, before joining Faulding as General Manager Sales and Marketing. This company has gone through various ownership changes through Mayne and now Symbion, where Steven is currently employed as Marketing Director for the Consumer Products division.
Vice President - Con Kounnas
Con has been in the Health Food Industry for 23 years as a manufacturer and distributor while operating his retail shops. He currently owns and is manager of GoVita Jamison/The Allergy Centre in the ACT. Con has been in the Canberra Small Business Council for 15 years where his skills in finance and communication have made a positive contribution.
Treasurer – Chris Karabalis
Chris is an economist. He worked as a research Fellow at the Athens Centre for Planning and Economic Research, and for over twenty two years in various Departments of the Australian Federal Public Service as an economist and project manager. In the last five years he has had an active involvement in the Complementary Healthcare industry and has been the proprietor of two Health Food stores in the ACT. Chris has been involved extensively in community work.
Ronda Jacobs
Ronda has been involved in the complementary healthcare industry in Australia for over 17 years, with a strong marketing background. She is currently Managing Director of Cardinal Health Australia, the leading contract manufacturer who partners with all of the major brands in Australia and South East Asia to bring innovative complementary healthcare products to the market. Ronda is also an elected member of the Board of ASMI, and a volunteer Director of Relationships Australia (Victoria). She has twice been nominated for the Telstra Business Woman of the Year award.
David Johnston
David has worked in the health industry for over 30 years and has been involved with most facets of the industry. He is currently the General Manager of Weleda Australia. David’s expertise as a mediator and negotiator has resulted in his high-level involvement with industry and government. He is a past recipient of the Lady Cilento Award, industry’s highest accolade.
Jennifer Tait
Jennifer joined Blackmores in 1995 and was appointed Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director in 2003. As sole direct report to the Executive Chairman, she is responsible for overall management of the organisation. Jennifer’s extensive career in the pharmaceutical and natural health industries included leading operational audits in 16 countries and global logistics initiatives delivering innovative supply chain improvements. Jennifer takes a lead role in Blackmores’ extensive corporate social responsibility program and is a mentor for the Lucy Program sponsored by the NSW Office for Women.
Frank Caruso
An automotive engineer by trade, Frank started shopping in health food stores back in 1977 and in 1982 opened his own health food store. Frank was also the marketing director for Go Vita for 15 years. In 1986, Frank co-published a natural health newspaper called Health News which was distributed to over 30 million homes nationally before selling his share of the publication in 1994. Twelve years ago Frank founded Totally Natural Products and has been passionately developing herbal and nutritional supplements which are available through health food stores and pharmacies retail outlets throughout Australia and New Zealand.
Sally Brumley
Sally originally trained as a librarian and made the shift to retail more than 20 years ago when she had her first child. She has since developed a passion for the wellness philosophy which permeates our industry. She still finds the industry satisfying exciting and (almost) always interesting. Her passions include helping people to maintain their health by achieving a healthy lifestyle.
Mark Matthews
Mark has been involved in the Complementary Healthcare industry for over 20 years and joined Nutra-Life as CEO in 1999. Nutra-Life is a leading health food store supplier in Australia, a market leader in New Zealand, and exports to over 20 countries Mark has responsibility for strategy and all operational activities including marketing, manufacturing, finance and technical. Mark is also on the Board of Natural Products New Zealand and AUT Enterprises – a company responsible for commercializing research at AUT University.
